Ludhiana | Gogi signals e-rickshaws for the collection of sorted waste

Gogi said around 90 electric rickshaws would be deployed in Ludhiana West Constituency. He further called on the public to cooperate with the civic body and hand over the separated dry and wet garbage to the garbage collectors.

In a bid to improve solid waste management, MLA (Ludhiana West) Gurpreet Gogi reported on Saturday electric rickshaws in Ghumar Mandi area for door-to-door collection of sorted waste.

The MC purchased 350 e-rickshaws worth over 9 crore for the city, of which 50 vehicles were delivered and deployed in different parts of the city. Local Organizations Minister Inderbir Singh Nijjar had flagged the project when he visited the city on July 15.

Gogi said around 90 electric rickshaws would be deployed in the western constituency. He further called on the public to cooperate with the civic body and hand over the separated dry and wet garbage to the garbage collectors.

Officials said the e-rickshaw would save time and energy for garbage collectors, who currently use trolleys to collect waste. A partition has been created in the container of the e-rickshaws to facilitate the separate collection of waste.

Faced with the heat of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the MC was struggling to provide segregation of waste in the city due to lack of infrastructure and through these e-rickshaws, the MC is expected to give a boost to solid waste management in the city.

The proposal to deploy e-rickshaws was tabled after a team from MC including Mayor Balkar Sandhu witnessed the same system in Chennai during their official visit last year to study solid waste management.
