ACT’s Freres Biochar CO2 Removal Project Selected by Microsoft’s 2022 Carbon Removal Program

Buying carbon credits will fuel biochar innovation for years to come

NEW YORK, March 11, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ACTthe leading provider of market-based custom solutions to reduce carbon footprint, and Brothers Lumber Co.a leading engineered wood products manufacturing company, today announced that Microsoft has selected its Biochar CO2 removal project for its 2022 Carbon Removal Program.

Founded in 2009, ACT helps businesses and organizations around the world reduce their carbon footprint by supporting high-impact climate projects that generate renewable certificates and carbon credits. Microsoft has agreed to purchase the carbon removal credits generated by the project, and Freres has pledged to invest a portion of the sales proceeds in research and development around biochar production – among other sustainability initiatives. .

“As part of the path towards our 2030 carbon negative goal, we are pleased to purchase biochar-based carbon offset credits through ACT, from North West based supplier Freres. Pacific,” said Elizabeth Willmott, carbon program director at Microsoft.

This purchase highlights the value of biochar as a powerful and compelling new carbon removal strategy. In addition to its commitment to be carbon negative by 2030, Microsoft has also pledged to remove its historic carbon emissions by 2050 and committed $1 billion to a climate innovation fund.

“Right now, biochar is an underutilized material that is not fully appreciated in industry with enormous carbon mitigation potential,” said Juan Camilo Escobar, Head of Renewable Energy and Carbon. at ACT. “Thanks to Microsoft’s investment, our joint project with Freres will lead to new innovations in the production and use of biochar across many industries. We’re excited to take action on the climate with one of the world’s largest and most innovative companies.

Biochar is a charcoal-like material created by burning carbon-rich biomass in a low-oxygen environment. Biochar is produced from materials such as wood waste, sawdust, agricultural waste and forestry residues. It is often dumped in landfills, but if used correctly, the carbon-rich organic material has various applications in a number of areas including: increasing soil pH, increasing filtration and water retention rates water, promote healthy fungal and microbial populations, and help mitigate wildfires.

“Biochar production, in conjunction with forest products systems, provides the opportunity to process underutilized biomass in a cost-effective and environmentally beneficial way,” said Kyle Freres, vice president of operations at Freres. Lumber. “We intend to continue to develop carbon-reducing by-products from wood products to help companies like Microsoft meet their sustainability goals.”

To date, ACT has helped facilitate the reduction of 145 million tons of CO2 in more than 40 countries.
